Wyoma Hammett

September 27, 1919 — April 4, 2017

Wyoma Clarissa White Hammett, a longtime Casper resident, died April 4, 2017, at the Central Wyoming Hospice. She was 97. She was a participant in square dancing, organ club and senior center activities.

Wyoma Hammett was born September 27, 1919, at the family home in Fremont County, Wyoming, to Ermie V. (Mabbs) and Jasper R. White. She was named after the Wyoma Flour Mill in Lander. Wyoma completed elementary school at Arapahoe and graduated high school in Riverton, Class of 1938. She attended college in Hastings, Nebraska, and Evanston, Illinois. After teaching in a one-room school in Hudson, she moved to Casper in 1941, working at Chopping Motors.

In 1947 she married Delmar V. Hammett. Together they enjoyed camping and traveling and were members of the Casper Organ Club. They operated a gas appliance service company. He preceded her in death in 1973.

On two separate occasions, she worked for the Employment Security Commission, retiring in 1986. She volunteered at Fort Caspar, the Nicolaysen Art Museum, and for over twenty-five years at the Casper Senior Center for the RSVP. During the Cold War she served as a volunteer in the Ground Observer Corps as a plane spotter. She enjoyed square dancing, card games, entertaining friends, and baking banana bread.

Wymie or Grandma Wymie, as she was known by her family and friends, is survived by her brother, Gail and sister-in-law, Lucile; step-son, Vern and daughter-in-law, Jo; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Cloyd, Earl, Gerald, Vern, and Carl, and sisters, Naida, Xenia, Nellie and Enid. She will be lovingly missed by all that knew her.

A memorial service, remembering Wyoma's life, is planned for Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Bethel Baptist Church, 3030 South Poplar, Casper, and a dessert reception following in the Church Hall. There will be a private graveside service.
