William Cater "Bill" age 65 was born November 24, 1948 to William & Ruth Cater in Centerville, Iowa. He was the 2nd child in a family of 6 children where he grew up in Des Moines, Iowa.
He joined the Navy in 1969. He served in the Vietnam War 1 year and was an engineman on river patrol boats, T-F 571 (River Rats). During his time in Vietnam he earned the Purple Heart. He was stationed in Groton Ct. as a diesel mechanic on a tug boat. Bill was honorably discharged in 1973.
After serving his country; Bill learned to drive a semi- truck and wandered around the country. He then became a Railroad locomotive engineer for The Rock Island Railroad and then worked as a train engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad in Alliance Nebraska for 18 yrs. In 1994 he transferred to Casper, Wy. He worked for Burlington Northern 30 + years, logging thousands of miles of train tracks over the years.
Besides his job Bill volunteered giving railroad safety presentations for school children and the public called "Operation Lifesaver", Bill was an active member of The Unitarian Universalist community of Casper.
Bill loved children, model trains, enjoyed photography, crossword puzzles, woodworking, travel especially to Yellowstone Park, reading and spending time with family and friends. He lived in Casper for over 19 years.
He is survived by his wife Jayne of 34 years, son Jeffrey Cater, Jeff's significant other Donna Hunter. His new granddaughter, Ivy Mae Cater of Casper and his honorary grandchildren; Faith and Rhett Roden. One brother, Earl Cater (Erma) of Phoenix, AZ, 2 sisters; Gwen (Mark) Speck of Des Moines, Iowa, Shirley (Rick) Coffman of Urbandale, Iowa and was a most beloved Uncle Bill to many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister Candace Marie Cater Huston and one brother Roy Austen Cater who died at birth.
A memorial service will be held on Monday April 14, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery Chapel 80 Cemetery Rd. in Evansville, Wy. 82636.
A reception will be held after the service at the Powder River VFW Post 911 420 W. 1st Street Casper, Wy.
