CASPER -- Funeral Mass for William Tanney Schwartz, 86, will be celebrated at noon Saturday, June 14, 2008, at St. Anthony's Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday at the church with a Vigil and Wake to follow at 7 p.m.
He died unexpectedly on June 8, 2008, at his long-time home on David Street.
He was born July 28, 1921, in Casper to William and Lorraine Tanney Schwartz. His older sister, Mary Lou, tragically died after surgery at age 20. Her death deeply impacted the family and caused him to be raised as an only child.
In school, he especially loved baseball and football. Although he was only 130 pounds, he won a position on the line of Natrona's 1937 state championship football team.
As a result of Bill's life-long commitment to high school football, he was honored in 2007 by the Wyoming Football Foundation as Wyoming's High School Football Fan of the Year.
He obtained his B.S. degree from Nebraska in 1943 and found himself in the United States Army with the Fifteenth Air Force. He ultimately flew 50 missions to heavily fortified industrial targets. He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant and earned several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He returned to the University of Nebraska where he earned his law degree in 1948
That summer, he exchanged marriage vows in St. Mary's Cathedral in Lincoln with a stunning University of Nebraska graduate, Anne Phillips. They were married 45 years and together raised four children before her untimely death in 1993.
They moved back to Casper in 1950, where he would eventually enter into partnership with his friend, Bill Bon. Along with Cam Walker and Judy Studer, it eventually grew into the firm of Schwartz, Bon, Walker & Studer.
He gave generously to every cause, particularly anything having to do with St. Anthony's parish.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Anne Barnes and her husband, St. Louis, Mo.; Susan Higgins, Lebanon, Pa.; and Sally Belcher and her husband, Cheyenne; one son, Bill Schwartz and his wife, Jackson; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in his name to Casper College Foundation for benefit of CC Nursing Program, 125 College Dr., Casper, 82601; or St. Anthony's Tri-Parish School, 218 E. 7th St., Casper, 82601.
