CASPER -- Warren Chadwick, 86, always wanted a party when he died with dancing, beer, fond memories and laughter. In honor of his wishes, his final gift to all of his friends and family is a Celebration of Life on the Observation Deck at Natrona County International Airport on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, from 4 to 9 p.m. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend.
He died peacefully in his sleep Sept. 25, 2007.
He was born May 8, 1921 in Plevna, Mont. One of five children, his folks homesteaded near Midwest, Wyoming where he graduated from high school in 1940.
He served in the Army in the Asiatic Theater in World War II. He was a turret gunner and bombardier on B-17 and B-24 bombers and was stationed in India and Australia. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for successfully completing more than 50 missions.
After the war, he met the love of his life, Laurel Tillman, while delivering the mail in the rain near Barnum. The day they eloped was one of the happiest of his life.
He ranched the Bar C out of Kaycee and later owned an insurance company and realty in Casper.
He always loved horses, rodeo, especially team roping, fishing, hunting, flying and his family. He was a great dancer and played a mean game of poker. He always had a sparkle in his eye, a kind word and a generous spirit.
He always said that he was lucky. His ship left Pearl Harbor less than 48 hours before the Japanese attack, he flew more than 50 missions in World War II, many where less than half of the squadron returned. He missed a plane back to the states that crashed on takeoff, killing everyone aboard. He survived numerous nasty horse wrecks when breaking colts, riding saddle broncs or cowboying at various ranches around Wyoming.
He and his wife gave many selfless and happy years as strong supporters of high school rodeo and the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association. Many people enjoyed team ropings and play days at their arena east of Casper.
Survivors include three of his four children and their spouses, Val Lathrop, Forrest Chadwick and Rene Allemand, all of Casper; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Elaire Miller of St. George, Utah and Vern of Colorado Springs.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years in April of 2006, by his eldest son, Jody Chadwick, by a great- granddaughter, his parents, stepfather, brother, Wayne, and sister, Irva Griffis.
Memorials may be made to the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association.
