Walter E. Metz Jr., 89, passed away on Sunday January 17, 2016 at Life Care in Casper, Wyoming.
Walter was born June 14, 1926 in Douglas, Wyoming to Walter and Gladys (Nolan) Metz. He was the middle child of seven with older sisters Helen Werner Ivester, Nell Foster, Florence (Toots) Septer, younger siblings William, Betty Pavelka and Fred. He was raised in Douglas attending school there through the eighth grade after which he worked road construction with his father. After turning 18 he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II, he was honorably discharged on October 29, 1946. On August 5, 1947 he married Helen Alice Shelden and shortly afterwards went to work for Stanolind Oil and Gas in Midwest, Wyoming. He worked for 37 years for the company in Midwest, Gillette and Casper retiring in 1984 from Amoco Production Company as a drilling and completion supervisor. He and Helen remained in Casper after retirement. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors. He was a skilled carpenter, woodworker and enjoyed the challenge of anything mechanical. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and especially enjoyed spending time with family. In 2009 he moved to Sheridan, Wyoming and made many new friends there. He enjoyed the Senior Center and watching wildlife out his back window and spending time with family especially his great grandchildren. He moved back to Casper October 2015 and was a resident at Mountain Plaza Assisted Living. He made friends wherever he went and will be greatly missed by many.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife and four sisters. His companion of nine years after Helen's death, Ann Detweiler also preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, William Metz of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Fred Metz of Elephant Butte, New Mexico; his children Carol (Don) Jepsen of Sun City Grand, Arizona; Darrell (Diana) Metz of Sheridan, Wyoming; grandchildren Stacy (Brian) Morgan of Casper; Randy (Rayna) Jepsen of Acworth, Georgia; Nicole (Justin) Johnston of Sheridan; Amber (Christopher) Flora of Westminster, Colorado; great-grandchildren Keegan and Georgia Johnston and Paul Flora; numerous nieces and nephews as well as Ann Detweiler's children and grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Oregon Trail Cemetery Chapel. Friends may call at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 710 East 2nd St, from 5 to 7 PM on, Thursday, January 21, 2016. Interment will be at the Oregon Trail Cemetery with military honors.
