Virginia (Harmeier) Harper, 88, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Life Care Center of Casper, following stroke complications. No services will be held. Interment will be at the Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery, with arrangements by Newcomer's Funeral Home.
She was born August 7, 1926 to Herman and Esther Harmeier at the family home in Fort Laramie, WY. Some of her early years were spent living in the Burt House at Old Fort Laramie where her father was caretaker. After graduation she went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in the roundhouse in Cheyenne.
On February 29, 1944, she married Keith Loucks and they became parents of four daughters. They lived in many towns throughout the state, due to his work. They divorced after 24 years of marriage. On September 10, 1969, she married Willard "Chan" Harper, and became stepmother to his children, Dennis and Doreen. Together, she and Willard enjoyed many years of traveling, gardening, and camping. Their travels took them to all 50 states, 7 Canadian provinces, and Mexico. After living in Sheridan, Green River and Moorcroft, they returned to Casper.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Erving Harmeier; sister, Lucille Caligiore; daughter, Jackie Lynn; and niece, Janet Caligiore. She is survived by her husband, Willard; daughters, Joan Goehring of Casper, Jean (Joe) Kennedy of Sheridan, Joyce (Rich) Carpenter of Casper; niece, Talitha (Kory) Caligiore Fleenor of Lingle. Her grandchildren include Kelli (Curt) Macha of Sheridan, Cory Kennedy of Sheridan, Scott (Julie) Carpenter of Gillette, Will Goehring of Riverton, and Jon (fiancée, Julianna Aycock) Goehring of Lander. Other survivors include 8 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 2 great great nephews; and a great niece.
A private funeral service will be held at Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery in Evansville, WY. Memorials in her name may be made to St. Joseph's Children's Home, PO Box 1117, Torrington, WY 82240 or to the Wounded Warrior's Project in care of Newcomer Funeral Home.
