Violet Rolland died in her sleep at her apartment, Thursday, December 8, 2005, at the age of 100. She had been in relatively good health for her advanced age, and active! Last year she had a big birthday party at St. Anthony Manor with family and friends galore attending, and with lots of pictures on hand about her life and big family.
Violet was born Jan. 10, 1905 in Rosco, S. Dak., the daughter of Bertha (Laab) and Desiree Barribo. Pres. "Teddy" Roosevelt was the U.S. President then.
She married Jean F. Rolland on Aug. 21, 1923 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a huge railroad center in those days. Her husband was a railroad machinist and worked in the C.N.W. roundhouse. Jean worked for the railroad and was transferred many times to different towns and states. He died June 1966 in Lincoln, Nebraska, and after a few years she moved in with her daughter Carolyn and husband, the Rev. Tod Hubbell.
Tod was a minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and when he retired they moved around to different states and cities doing interim ministries. After Carolyn's death on Aug. 21, 1993, Violet stayed with Tod doing cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. for five more years.
In 1998 Violet moved to Casper, WY. to be near her daughter Dottie and her husband Bob, and her many grandchildren. She lived on her own at St. Anthony Manor in her tidy apartment. She went to all the activities, exercise three times a week, birthday parties, movies, and active at First Christian Church in Casper. She and her granddaughter were in worship together just two weeks ago! She loved her church, crocheting, reading, and oil painting (runs in the family!).
