Memorial Services for Verla A. Carter, R.N., age 85, will be held Friday, July 19, 2019 at 10:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Casper. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Newcomer Casper Chapel.
Miss Carter died peacefully on December 16, 2018 at Central Wyoming Hospice. She was born December 31, 1932, the third daughter of Floyd Hayes and Margaret Eissler Hayes. She graduated from NCHS in 1951, Casper College in 1953, and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Wyoming in the summer of 1954 as a member of the first class to graduate from the University of Wyoming's baccalaureate nursing program. After working as a Registed Nurse in Casper and Boise, Idaho, she returned to school and completed a Master's of Science Degree in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing in 1963 at U.C.L.A. Following that she returned to Wyoming and worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sheridan, then worked at the Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston for 15 plus years.
In 1979, Miss Carter returned to Casper and the joined the nursing faculty at Casper College. She retired from teaching in 1994 but then continued to work half-time through 1995.
In addition to her long nursing career, Miss Carter enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, writing poetry, travelling, and spending time with her family, friends and her pets. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Casper up until the time of her death.
Miss Carter is survived by one sister, Vera E. Scarr, her twin, and one brother, Jack Carter, of Hoodsport, Washington, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and maternal grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Casper College scholarship fund, Central Wyoming Hospice, First United Methodist Church, or a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery of Casper.
