Velda Jean Hughes, 89, of Casper, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015.
She was born to the late Granville and Alda Flood, August 7, 1925, in Greenfield, Iowa. She graduated from Winterset High School in Winterset, Iowa, in 1943 and from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in 1947 with a B.A. in education. In 1947 she married the late Keith Hughes, and they lived in Iowa until heading west in 1957.
Jean was a teacher at Grant School for 30 years, retiring in 1990. She loved her sixth grade students and maintained close friendships with many of them and their families.
Jean was a life member of the NEA, Alpha Delta Kappa teachers' sorority, and the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She belonged to the First Southern Baptist Church in Casper.
Velda Jean is survived by two children, Lynn (Tom) Lange of Casper and Kent P. Hughes of Ojai, CA; four grandchildren, Nathan (Leah) Lange, Jocelyn (Shane) Conrad, Zachary Hughes and Sam Hughes and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Verle Flood, her husband Keith Hughes, and an infant son, Jack Hughes.
A graveside service is scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to the Central Wyoming Hospice or the Casper Human Society.
