Thomas McGlade, 94, passed away May 8th, 2023, at Meadow Winds Assisted Living in Casper, Wyoming. Tom was born in Waterloo, Iowa to Joseph and Loretta (Weiland) McGlade on December 1, 1928. He grew up in Waterloo, attended Sacred Heart Church and school, and spent his early adult years working as a third-generation bricklayer in the Waterloo area. He was a Seabee in the Naval Reserve and became a police-officer in Waterloo, working his way up to Sergeant. He met his first wife, Catherine Harn, while delivering papers to her house. They were married in April of 1948 and raised five children, Thomas W., Suzanne, Daniel, John and William. The family later moved to Deadwood, South Dakota after taking annual vacations in the Hills. While in Deadwood, Tom worked at different jobs including trucking, logging and police work. He and Catherine later divorced, and Tom briefly moved back to Waterloo. He returned to Deadwood and eventually moved to Whitewood, South Dakota, where he became the town's Police Chief. It was in Whitewood where he met his second wife, Meriel Lillis and her three young boys. They married in April of 1977 and with her boys, Tom started a new chapter in his life.
During his time in Whitewood, Tom was Police Chief (and only policeman), served on the city council and later served as Mayor. Tom resided in Whitewood until his 91st birthday when he moved to Casper and his new home at Meadow Winds. Tom resided at Meadow Winds until his passing.
Tom is survived by five of his six children with Catherine: Tom (Donna) McGlade, Sue (Tim) Hinker, Dan (Teresa) McGlade, John (Mindy) McGlade, Bill (Kelly) McGlade and one stepson, Ricky Lillis. Tom was also blessed with his grandchildren Jeff, Amy, Jared, Nick, Nicholas, Katie Jo, Erin, Joshua, Daniel Allen, Austin, and Kaitlyn, as well as several great-grandchildren. Tom is also survived by his brother Richard (Dorothy) McGlade as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine, second wife Meriel, Tom and Catherine's first born, Kathleen (passed shortly after her birth), his parents Joseph and Loretta, as well as two of Meriel's three boys, Clayton and Curtis Lillis. Tom will be cremated and interred at his family plot in Whitewood overlooking his adopted town, home, and the beauty of his beloved Black Hills.
The family thanks the administration, nurses and staff of Meadow Winds for the wonderful home they provided Tom, the directors and nurses of Caring Edge Hospice for their loving care, and Tom's fellow residents at Meadow Wind for enthusiastically welcoming him into their community.
