GLENROCK, WY – A Mass of Christian Burial for Tom Schubert, 89, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Saint Louis in Glenrock, Wyoming on Wednesday, February 20, with Fr. Robert Fox Officiating. Our Lord called Tom home peacefully after a brief illness while at Life Care Center of Casper on Saturday, February 16, with family at his side.
Tom was one of eight children, born in Staten Island, New York to Franz "Frank" and Maria Schubert on September 17, 1923. As was common during the Great Depression, he worked during his youth to help support the family along with his father and older siblings. He received his high school education at Curtis High School before enlisting with the U.S. Marine Corps in December, 1943. An expert rifleman, he served as rifle coach at Paris Island before being assigned to the 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division during the battle for Iwo Jima. After his first discharge as Corporal in 1946, he reenlisted in 1948 and served at various peacetime posts in the New York City area before his discharge as a Staff Sergeant in 1952.
He married his beloved Mary E. Mooney of Stapleton, Staten Island, in 1951 and raised two children. He worked for Sperry Gyroscope Company making aircraft and ordinance instruments and rose from machinist/toolmaker to engineering assistant, then mechanical designer. He also worked for Thomas Edison Laboratories, General Precision Aerospace, and S.S. White Dental Manufacturing before retiring from Plessey Dynamics in 1987.
Tom was an avid salt-water surfcasting fisherman and looked forward all year to his autumn weekend trip to Montauk Point on eastern Long Island. He was an active member of Stapleton's Immaculate Conception Church and Parish, steadfast in his Faith and a model of tolerance and compassion for anyone in need. Driven by his Marine spirit de corps, Tom was a founding member of the Marine Corps League's Staten Island Detachment, now over 450 strong. He had a special fondness for the Irish, and would never miss a Notre Dame football game.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alexander, Jules, and Robert, sisters Sophia, Beatrice and Theresa, and his wife of 45 years in 1996.
He is survived by his brother Leo of Toms River, New Jersey, daughter Donna Carlson (Carl) of Hazlet, New Jersey, son Arthur (JoAnn) of Glenrock, Wyoming, granddaughter Carrie Jo Schubert of Glenrock, grandson John Thomas Cackowski (Natalie) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, great-granddaughter Leah and great-grandson Joel Cackowski of Highlands Ranch. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and friends old and new, both in New York and Wyoming.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Staten Island, New York with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the church or the charity of the donor's choice.
