Thomas (Tom) Patrick Barrett passed away May 3, 2012 at Central Wyoming Hospice; in the arms of his beloved wife Betsy, following a massive stroke that occurred Sunday.
Tom was born in Chicago to Irish immigrant parents Patrick and Mary Barrett on January 30, 1936.
Following high school he joined the U.S Marine Corp and served from 1954 to 1957, where he fought in the Korean War. After his service to his country, he studied engineering at the University of Illinois. He married Betsy Campbell in 1960 and moved to Denver to work in the engineering firm of Stearns Rogers. There they had all four children; Patrick, Kathleen, Michael and Brian.
In the early 60's they moved to California, where he started his career as a loss prevention engineer for insurance brokers. In 1977 they moved to Casper where he served the major client Pacific Power covering all their power plants and coal mines. While they were in Casper, in the 1970's they started the Casper Youth Soccer League from scratch, putting up goal posts, refereeing, coaching, getting parents involved and interested in games. Thirty five years later, the League continues to thrive with thousands of children and parents enjoying soccer games all over Casper. The first CYSL Patch (the brown and gold cowboy boot with soccer cleats was Tom's design).
Tom retired in 1996 and wanted to give back, so he volunteered to drive the DAV van for veterans needing to go to Cheyenne. He did that for several years, then after a battle with cancer and recovering, he was a Wyoming Medical Center volunteer out at the Rocky Mountain Oncology center, driving patients to and from appointments and helping the staff in other ways as needed. Tom could fix anything.
He is survived by his wife Betsy, children: Patrick and wife Mary Anne and their three children, Stephanie, Thomas and Erika. Kathy Pesa and husband Mark and their three children, Kimmy Juarez, Jamie Pesa and Joseph Pesa. Michael Barrett, and Brian and his wife Jennifer Barrett. Also his sister Mary Therese O' Connell of Minnesota. He was able to see and hold two great grandchildren born just 8 months ago, Emerie and Patrick.
Services are in the care of Newcomer Funeral home and will be held on Monday, May 7, 2012 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 10:30 AM.
