Thomas James (Tom) Barnes was born in Cheyenne WY, on Oct. 15, 1915. Tom was the 3rd of seven children born to Fred and Melvina Law Barnes. With love and affection he let us go on Feb. 8, 2011 at the age of 95 years.
Tom married Mary Margaret Markward at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Feb. 21, 1941. Tom was called to arms in 1943. He was a member of the Army Engineers serving in the Pacific. As a sideline during the war on Guadalcanal, he and Clarence "Buzz" Busby Became an overnight success at photography. Upon discharge in 1946 Tom drove for the Casper City Bus Co. From there he worked for a time at Bowen's Hardware. He then joined the Amoco Refinery Company. He worked there from 1953 to 1974. Tom had to take an early retirement for medical reasons. He brought much joy and laughter to his many co-workers and friends.
Upon retirement Tom never looked back with any longing for his old job. He and Mary hit the road and traveled wherever and whenever they wanted. They ventured across the pond to England to visit found relatives there. Many happy hours were spent with friends hunting for arrow heads and running from rattlesnakes (Mary). Having his family and friends close were his greatest joy. Laughter and smiles he brought to all with his many jokes and pranks.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and a son Loring V. Barnes who died on January 13, 2002.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, 3 weeks shy of 70 years. Son Mark and wife Ronda and their three children. He also has 5 great grandchildren. His brothers, George and wife Elaine, of Salt Lake City, and Cecil and wife June of Casper. He has many nieces and nephews. He always brought joy and laughter when with them.
We who knew him well knew him as a kind and loving husband, father, father-in-law, grand father and great grandfather. Thomas James Barnes was a very kind and gentle soul.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Monday Feb. 14th at St. Marks Episcopal Church. Burial will be at 1:00 pm at Wyoming Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to The Natrona County Burn Fund C/O Casper Fire Department #1, 200 W. 1st St. Casper 82601.
