Tess Garrett
Tess Garrett, of Casper, passed away April 20, 2009 at the Wyoming Medical Center after an illness. The daughter of Nick and Mary DeWinter Straatsma, she was born March 15, 1919 in Gillette, WY and was the second of three daughters. In high school she was an avid artist and drew the pictures for her highschool yearbook. After college, she went to work for Labin Garrett at the locker plant which is now known as Wienricks. She was united in marriage to Labin Garrett on Nov, 15, 1945 and to this union a son, Pete was born. They sold the lockerplant and moved to the Garrett Ranch in Bates Hole. Tess taught school in Freeland for the 1946-1947 schoolyear. Tess also worked on the ranch doing the cooking which was always excellent, but the part she liked best was riding and working with the horses and cattle.
Tess was very active in 4-H, working in many different areas, livestock, leathercraft, plant identification, cooking, record books and received the golden leader award before retiring.
Mrs. Garrett always had a large garden and beautiful flower beds, her favorite flower was the iris, of which she had many varieties. Her hobbies were needlepoint, embroidery, sewing, latchhook rugs and reading. Tess worked on the Natrona County Election Board for many years.
Survivors include her son, Pete Garrett and his wife Ethel, a grandson, Steven Garrett and his wife Kim, a granddaughter, Laura Miles and her husband Jack. There are two great grandsons, Tyler and Dalton Garrett and her sister, Mascy Haight. Tess was preceded in death by her husband and by a sister, Iona Kelsey.
There will be no services at her request and memorial contributions may be made to the Natrona County Library for large print books or the charity of the donors choice.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Newcomer Funeral Home.
