CASPER -- Funeral services for Ted J. Kersting, 73, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with Fr. Bob Fox officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery with the United Veterans Council and The National Guard according military rites.
He died Feb. 13, 2008, at Central Wyoming Hospice Home.
He was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Laramie, the son of Leo F. and Marie (Hunter) Kersting.
He spent most of his childhood in Laramie. In his mid-teens, he moved to New York and graduated high school from Ten Broeck Academy.
After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy Seabees and served a four-year tour.
In June 1957, he married Marilyn Wotowey in Laramie. He attended the University of Wyoming and began his employment with the City of Laramie in 1957 as a patrolman. They raised three children in Laramie while he worked his way through the ranks of the police department.
In 1971, he was promoted to Chief of Police and retired from the department in 1979.
While in law enforcement, he attended many law enforcement schools, including the National FBI Academy. He also taught at the State of Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy.
After retirement, he moved to Casper with his family. Soon after, he began a career with the IRS, joined Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, and began volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. After retiring from the IRS, he began work part-time as a security officer at the Dick Cheney Federal Building in Casper
His greatest joy was spending time with his family, who will all miss him greatly.
Survivors include his wife and sons, Michael Kersting and his wife and Robert Kersting, all of Casper; daughter, Catherine Kersting-Clock and her husband of Cartwright, N.D.; two brothers, Jack Kersting of Wheatland and Gary Kersting of Cuba, N.Y.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leo E. Kersting.
