Roy F. Read, 85, a longtime Casper resident, died at Wyoming Medical Center on April 29, 2009. Roy was born July 29, 1923 in Starkville CO. the only child of Grover and Belle Read, of Casper. He attended school in Casper as a young man where he met Lucille Pavelka, his future bride. After joining the US Navy in 1944, he served on the USS Enterprise CV-6 during World War II. At the end of the war, Roy and Lucille married at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church on June 19, 1945. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1946 he located to Norman Oklahoma and attended college at the University of Oklahoma. Returning to Casper in 1948, Roy and Lucille built and settled into their new home in Allendale where they lived until his death. During the 50's and 60's he was employed by several dealerships in Casper as a mechanic, and Service Manager. In the late sixties he worked as a welder in the oil fields. Starting in the early seventies Roy joined the faculty at Casper College as an Automotive Instructor. In 1985 he retired from the college and enjoyed retirement watching Nascar, his children's success, and sharing his new found free time with his wife, Lucille.
Roy and Lucille raised seven children: Roy Read and wife Janet of Casper, Mary Pyeatte and husband Charlie of Chandler, AZ, Dave Read and wife Janice of Cheyenne, Lisa Read of Casper, Matt Read of Casa Grande, AZ, Lucille Collins and husband Mike of Chandler, AZ, Vanessa Larsen and husband Don of Gilbert, AZ. They have 14 grandchildren and most recently welcomed their first great grandchild.
During Roy's near 64 years of marriage to Lucille he was very actively involved in the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and for several years, served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 2. During the 50's and 60's Roy and Lucille were foster parents to many of Natrona County's Youth.
Visitation will be at Newcomer Funeral Home May 4 from 9-11 AM. As a veteran of the Navy and Wyoming National Guard, services and interment will be conducted at 12 noon at Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Roy's name to:
