Roger Dale Ashbaugh lost his valiant battle with cancer in the early hours of June 22, 2020. He was 73.
Born to Dale and Margaret ( née Macku ) on August 3, 1946 in Riverton, Wyoming, he joined his older brother Peter and was later followed by Gail, his sister.
He grew up a curious child and constantly showed his inventive and enterprising side . Revealing his inquisitive mind as a child and later in his teens, Roger was encouraged by his parents to engage in his love of machines, old cars and anything having to do with electronics.
After graduating from Riverton High School in 1965, he attended two years at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, but soon found himself drawn to enlisting in the USNavy, being aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard.
It was there that his love of electronics took off in the direction that would allow him to learn and implement under excellent instructors.
Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1971, Roger returned to Wyoming and the University in Laramie and graduated in 1975 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he took a job working for the Navy, but this time as Navy Reserve, in Concord, California. He was attached to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center as an Electronics Engineer working with Phoenix Missile Systems. He later was promoted to Systems Engineer and retired in 1999, returning to his beloved Wyoming.
He purchased land at Bessemer Bend and began yet another Herculean project of building his own home.
Roger loved his family and remained close to his siblings, nieces and nephews and later great nieces and nephews.
He was a talented machinist, potter and carpenter. His building skills were always in high demand, helping Gail build a holiday home in Lander and recently wiring Peter's cabin on Casper Mountain. He enjoyed brewing his own beer and baking bread. He loved hiking, boating, fishing and traveling; especially to New Zealand to visit Gail and her family with his dear friend Sally Winkle from Albuquerque, NM. He was an avid photographer and keeper of the family's history.
Roger is survived by his brother Peter (Marlene) and his sister Gail Powell(Jim) 3 nieces Heather Ashbaugh Doerges (Kyle), Elke Powell Beca (Bruce) and Eileen Ashbaugh Lemm (Richard).
He is also survived by his 3 nephews, Blake Powell (Olivia) Matthew Ashbaugh (Nicole) and Guy Powell (Lizzie) and his 10 great nieces and nephews.
