Robert S. "Steve" Riley was born in Sunshine, Wyoming to Noah and Margaret Riley where they lived on his family ranch above Meeteetse, Wyoming on the Wood River. The family moved to Cody, Wyoming so Steve could attend High School. In 1943 he enlisted into the US Army at Fort Logan, Colorado and assigned to the chemical motor battalion. He was on the first ship that landed at LaHare, France and was in the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theater. He was in the V-Day parade in NYC on July 4, 1946.
Steve and Barbara Jones were married in Deer Lodge, Montana in 1946. He and Barbara lived in Cody working various jobs until 1954 they moved to Casper where Steve started working for the Wyoming Department of Agriculture as a Weight and Measures Inspector in 1955. He later retired from the State of Wyoming in 1985.
Steve and Barb traveled throughout the South West for many winters during retirement in their motor homes.
In January of 2013 they relocated to Park Place Assisted Living Center in Casper and in July of 2014 he went to Life Care in Casper.
He is survived by his wife, Barb, of 65 years; daughter Letricia Miller (Jim), of Casper; son, N.A. (Mary) Riley of Fargo, ND. Steve and Barb have five grandsons, Tim Miller and Beth, and Kevin (Angie) Miller of Casper; Mike (Karla) Riley of Fargo, ND; Tyler Riley of Dent, MN; and Joe (Emily) Riley of Fargo, ND. They have 6 great-grandchildren; Tim Miller, Emily Miller, Kyle Miller, of Casper, WY and Noah Riley, Ella Riley and Hayes Riley, of Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service for Steve will be held at Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery on Thursday August 28, 2014 at 10:00 AM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital in Steve's name.
