Robert Russell (Big Bear) Sorensen, 62, Of Casper, passed away Friday, November 11, 2011 from complications of Diabetes.
Rob was born, September 7, 1949 in Douglas Wyoming. He was adopted by Robert and Maxine Sorensen when he was two days old.
Rob married his High School sweetheart Isabel Shutts on February 25, 1967 in Jackson Wyoming, this February celebrating 45 years together.
He went to Garfield Elementary School, Dean Morgan Jr. High, NCHS and Parks Business School in Denver Colorado.
He was employed in the automotive industry in Casper for over 40 years.
Being an avid fly fisherman he loved the outdoors.
One of Rob's greatest enjoyments was taking his boys fishing.
He loved sports and was a founding member of the Casper
Midget Football Association in which he coached for 32 years.
He coached 19 years in the Casper Youth Baseball League and
17 years for Casper Amateur Hockey. Rob loved working with kids and coaching with his best friend Ron Adams.
He was honored by the National Football Foundation in 2007 for his coaching and dedication to youth sports and for the positive influence he has had on thousands of youth by adhering to a simple coaching formula, as created by Rob "HAVE FUN, TRY YOUR BEST, and BE A GOOD SPORT". Rob was also responsible for organizing the booth crews and doing stats for NCHS football for 40 years. He rarely missed a game and he loved his Mustangs!
Rob influenced many of our youth in the Casper community
through his coaching. He believed that there was more to coaching than just training and skill development. He said, "you have to get down on your knees, look in their eyes and talk to them on their own level. You're a model for them and need to try to reach each kid". He wouldn't measure his success by wins but by how many of his players were still participating the following year and how many of those kids were playing at the high school level. There are many adults who still call him coach and remember that special season when Rob was their coach.
Rob loved to barbecue and would fix Rob's ribs and Grampy's pancakes for anyone who wanted them.
Rob and his 3 son's enjoyed a week long fly fishing trip to Alaska in 2002 and this summer shared a fishing adventure on the Taylor River in Gunnison Colorado.
Rob loved his family; wife of 44 years, his 3 sons, Grandchildren, his Lab's, his Esterbrook cabin and had a very special place in his heart for all of his Shutts brothers and sisters.
Rob was at peace when he was at his cabin. He can now spend the rest of his days on Laramie Peak enjoying all that he loved.
