Robert E. Dobbins, 84, passed away on November 11, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Greybull, WY, the youngest son of Cecil Clifford Dobbins and Elta French (Lindsey) Dobbins.
On June 19, 1948, at the Presbyterian Church in Red Lodge, MT he married Florence "Flo" Lynne Casey, also a Wyoming native from Greybull. On their 25th and 50th anniversary, they renewed their vows.
Bob was raised and educated in Greybull, Wyoming, graduating in a class of 19 from Greybull High School in 1944. A special program was offered to seniors called ASTP (Army Specialist Training Program). Bob was one of those selected and attended Colorado State University, before entering the service in 1944. After the war he continued his education at the University of Wyoming.
He was an avid fan of the University of Wyoming, Casper College, and the Denver Broncos.
A natural athlete, he enjoyed all sports and in his young years he obtained a private class pilot license, played basketball, football. In his adult years he concentrated on waterskiing, bowling, horseshoes, and golfing.
His love of country always remained very important to him. Bob was a US Army WWII veteran from 1944-1946 serving as Corporal, Technician Fifth Grade 221st Quarter Master Battalion of the 332nd Infantry. He was awarded the Battles Bronze Star and the President Unit Citation along with other medals. Recalled into service for the Korean War in1950, he served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team 23rd Division until December 1951.
Robert worked at Foe's Ranger Creek Dude Ranch (on top of the Big Horns) and in the summer of 1942 he was involved with the construction of the Japanese relocation camp between Cody and Powell (Heart Mountain).When school let out in 1943 he rode the bus to Seattle, Washington where he worked at the Bremerton shipyard for the summer and stated that it was an interesting experience to see all that water and to be working at repairing and rebuilding the numerous ships that were damaged so badly during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Bob began his career in the oil field when he went to work for Baroid Mud Co. as a logging engineer moving quite often to Utah, Texas, and Nebraska before being recalled into service on October 9, 1953. He worked for True and Brown now True Drilling Oil Company as a (CPA) Certified Public Accountant until his retirement in 1992.
He was an active member of the V.F.W. He also served as Trustee for many years with the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks #1353, a past President of the Petroleum Industry Administrative Society and served as a deacon and elder for the First Presbyterian Church in Casper as well as coached for the church basketball team. For years he was a member of the Casper Golf Club, T-Bird Boosters, Cowboy Joe Club, and numerous Bowling Leagues.
He loved to travel and has traveled extensively to other countries with his beloved wife Flo. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed wintering in Arizona. His wife was diagnosed in 2006 with Alzheimer's disease prompting their move back to Casper in 2007.
Survivors include; his wife, Florence, three sons, Frank and Dan Dobbins of Denver, Colorado; David Dobbins of Casper; a daughter, Renea Kerr and her husband Tom Kerr of Casper; 7 grandchildren; DeAnna Dobbins of Aliso Viejo, California; Kimberly and Stephanie Dobbins of Denver, Colorado; Jordan Casey Dobbins of Phoenix, Arizona; Redea and Robay Dobbins of Casper; Relena Dobbins of El Mirage, Arizona. Also surviving are 3 great-grandchildren, Seraiah, Elijah and Isaiah Dobbins of Casper as well as number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ted of Denver, Colorado and Richard of Riverside California.
FUNERAL SERVICE: A Funeral Service for longtime Casper resident, Robert Earl Dobbins, will be held on Thursday, November 17th 2011 at 10:00 AM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 710 E. 2nd St., Casper, WY., officiated by Rev. Paul Kuhn of the First Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 16th at Newcomer Funeral Home. Graveside Service will be at the Hillside Cemetery in Greybull, WY on Friday, November 18th, 2011 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Becky Anderson officiating. Military graveside services will be provided
