Richard Dale VonRiesen
After braving an extended illness with his usual grace, Richard Dale VonRiesen passed into the arms of his Savior on March 31, 2017. Dale was born to Emil and Marian Gregg VonRiesen in Topeka, Kansas on April 8, 1935.
Dale received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1960 from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He received a Master degree in Marketing in 1962 and a PhD in Marketing in 1968 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
In his youth, Dale's Aunt Geri had encouraged him to seek a career in the field of forestry or animal biology where he could be outdoors and satisfy his spirit of adventure. However, Dale was selfless and took his responsibilities seriously, so when it came time to select a profession, he chose Marketing because it would better provide for his family.
Dale began his teaching career at Colorado State University in 1964. In 1967, he returned to Kansas, teaching at Wichita State. Dale loved the West, especially the Rocky Mountains, so when the University of Wyoming offered him a position to develop and administer a graduate business program at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, he gladly accepted. In 1988, Dale transferred to the University of Wyoming/Casper College, where he taught Marketing. In 2001, Dale retired as Emeritus Professor of Marketing.
Photography and the outdoors had been Dale's passions since youth. In 1953, while in high school, Dale had won a major award for his "Old Settler's Cabin" photo. So, in retirement, this spirit of adventure resurfaced. Dale spent his remaining active years photographing wildlife in Yellowstone National Park, again winning several awards.
Dale married Cheryl K. Miller on February 28, 1991. They were devoted to each other in all aspects of their life…in church, in nature, in the classroom. The couple loved the Lord.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Virginia Lee Petterson.
Dale is survived by his wife, Cheryl, his three children, Gregory (Jeanne), Michael (Desrae) and Karen (Bart), stepchildren James (Angela) and Joshua (Jenny), and grandchildren Christina, Caleb, Abigail, Luke, Shepherd, Colter and Maxton. Dale also is survived by his brother-in-law John (Helen) and nephews Jim (Jeanine) and Jeff (Julie).
Dale will be missed for his sharp wit, his compassion, and his genteel nature. A memorial service will be held at Newcomer's Funeral Home in Casper on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 2pm. A family inurnment will take place during the summer with military rites. Memorial donations may be made to True Care Casper, 1746 S. Poplar St., Casper, WY 82601.
