Richard Crane died on July 24, 2012 at the age of 90 with his family and the dedicated staff at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in attendance. He was born April 1, 1922 in Wayne, PA to Amzi Beach and Inez Bogle Crane. He was very active and proud to be in Paoli Troop #1 BSA, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in 1938, and graduated from Radnor High School and Haverford School.
Dick attended Duke University and graduated in 1947 after serving in the Navy during WW II. While at Duke he met Elizabeth "Betty" Trask and the two later wed in Wilmington, DE. Dick worked in the sales divisions of Berwind Coal and Consolidated Coal Companies in Philadelphia, PA and New York City, NY. He moved to Greensboro, NC and finished his career with Amherst Coal Company. Dick was the consummate salesman and truly thrived on meeting new people who usually became faithful customers as well as life-long friends.
Dick enjoyed retirement: taking trips to the Carolina coast and riverboat excursions along several US/Canada waterways with his wife, visiting their three daughters and families, being a confirmed "duffer" on public golf courses, and building and running a sizeable model train collection. Throughout his life, Dick was an ardent Philadelphia Phillies fan. He also followed the Duke men's and women's basketball teams and admired Coach K immensely.
Due to health issues, Dick and Betty moved to Wyoming to be near their daughter. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, a niece, and a nephew. He will be deeply missed by his three daughters: Candy (Zeke) Zechiel of Douglas, WY; Buffy (Jon) Gehring of Hudson, WI; and Missy (Bob) Gamble of Harrison, TN; grandchildren: Elizabeth (Ryan) Ostrander, Anna (Trevor) Frogge, Michael (Kodi) Zechiel, David (Megan) Gehring, Molly (David) Sutton, and Richard Gamble; and eight great grandchildren.
A family gathering will be held at a future date to celebrate Dick's life. Cards of condolence may be mailed to 1024 Durango Dr., Douglas, WY 82633. Donations may be made in his honor to Paoli Troop #1 BSA, 1038 Radnor Rd., Wayne, PA 19087. Arrangements are under the direction of Newcomer Funeral Home and Crematory.
