"This sailor has slipped his moorings & pointed his bow out to sea."

Raymond John Toups Sr., age 93, passed to his final resting place on June 6, 2019. He died at Central Wyoming Hospice surrounded by his sons & daughter. He was born in Luling LA, on November 24, 1925, and spent most of his growing years in Texas City, Texas.

He joined the navy at the age of 18 and served on the USS Oakland CL95 which provided anti-enemy aircraft support for US Carriers from 1942-1945. He was involved in the major battles in the South Pacific, at Iwo Jima, Leyte Gulf, Guadalcanal, Saipan, and Tienim-Guam among others.

After his honorable discharge, Ray graduated from Arkansas A & M with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. He was employed as a petroleum engineer for the Federal Dept of Defense. He met and married Floye Jean Matthews in 1948 in Texas City. They raised 6 children. In that time the family moved to TX, KS, OK, WY, Italy, Thailand and 2 assignments in Bermuda. After each tour, they came back to Wyoming; Newcastle, Cheyenne, Casper, where they retired and settled.

Always the adventurer, Ray took his family on many foreign excursions, giving them a fantastic life of memories. He was a "tough love" father, instilling integrity, honesty, honor and a work ethic in his children.

He was a competitive chess player throughout his life and taught others to play; he played tennis and ping pong; was a youth baseball coach; and he was a Boy Scout Master for years.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in 2005, daughter Tracie Olson & grandson Jacob Olson. He is survived by his daughters Shelly Coddington (Ron) of North Carolina; Terry Gallagher (Patrick) of Casper, sons 'Pete' Raymond John Jr. (Christy), Stephen Toups (Cathy), Joseph Toups (Carol), all of Casper. He leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.
