CASPER -- Services for Philip O. Doornbos, 93, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 12, 2007 at St Marks Episcopal Church

with Rev. John Smylie officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.

He died April 8, 2007.

He was born Jan. 23, 1914 in rural Kansas to Edward W. and Eva (Eckel) Doornbos. After attending a rural elementary school and secondary schools in EI Dorado, Kan., he graduated from the University of Kansas in 1935.

Because of the war in Europe, he enrolled as a flying cadet in the Army Air Corps and successfully completed pilot training in 1941. He served as an instructor pilot at Kelly Field for a short time until being assigned overseas in the Southwest Pacific against the Japanese, flying combat missions in B-24 (Liberator) bomber aircraft.

On a raid against the Japanese station at Rabaul, New Britain, he was forced to crash land his B-24 bomber in the ocean and was severely wounded. Fortunately, he and surviving crew members were rescued by friendly forces.

After recovering from his wounds, he was assigned in July, 1944 to Casper Army Air Base as an instructor pilot. He met and married Dorothy Anne Cotton of Casper.

Following WWII, he received various military assignments and was with the 19th Bomb Group at the beginning of the Korean War, flying B-29 combat missions.

Returning from the Korean War, he was made commander of an Air Force B-47 group and advanced in rank to regular Air Force colonel. He retired after 25 years of uninterrupted service in the Air Force.

After retirement from the Air Force, Dr. Tilghman H. Aley, president of Casper College, invited him to come to Casper College. He filled several administrative positions including business manager and executive director of the Casper College Foundation. Most of the buildings at Casper College were built and furnished during Dr. Aley's tenure.

He participated in this contracting, financing and construction program. He was successful in raising millions of dollars through gifts, bond issues, and oil and gas royalty income to finance this program.

He was active and participated in many civic affairs. His interests also included cattle ranch operations at ranches near Glenrock and in the southern Big Horns.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Casper Country Club. He also owned a home on a golf course at Palm Desert, Calif.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Newcomer Family funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
