Otis J. Straughan Jr.
Otis was born on February 6, 1933, at 2 lbs. 14 oz, to parents Marjorie Marshall Straughan and Otis J. Straughan Sr. in Dallas, Texas.
He graduated from Forest Ave. High School in 1950, then attended North Texas State College and Southern Methodist University where he received his B.A. Degree with a major in Accounting. He and Norma Cummings married on July 20, 1954 at Forest Ave. Baptist Church, Dallas, TX. They had two sons Craig and Bruce.
The Straughans moved to Jackson, Wyoming in 1973. Otis founded a crew for officiating high school football in 1974. The Jackson crew of which Otis was the referee traveled all over Wyoming to work high school football games. Otis worked 4 Shrine Bowls in Laramie and Casper before spinal stenosis left him paralyzed from the waist down and ended his officiating career in 1997. Otis was inducted into the Wyoming Sports Officials Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
Otis started his accounting practice in 1975, becoming a C.P.A. in 1991 and continued to practice as an Accountant until his recent illness.
In 1976, Otis joined the original Gideon's camp in Jackson. The Straughans were very active as members of First Baptist Church in Jackson. Otis served several terms as Treasurer, and Elder, and almost two terms as Moderator. Norma served as church Secretary. Otis co-chaired outdoor evangelistic meetings in 1994 and 1995.
The Straughans moved from Jackson to Casper in 2003. It was not easy to leave beautiful Jackson, and over 30 years of friendships, Otis's clients, and a wonderful church; but new friendships were quickly made in Casper. They became members of First Baptist Church in Casper in May 2004.
Otis is survived by his wonderful wife of 63 years, sons, Craig, and his wife,Cheryl and Bruce, and his wife, Sarah; grandchildren; Amanda, Ashley, Jacob, Anna, Rebecca, and Steven, and his brother Ted Straughan.
Memorial contributions in Otis's memory may be made to: First Baptist Church of Casper, Gideons International, or to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Camp Scholarship Fund.
A viewing will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home-Casper Chapel on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Casper on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. There will be a Reception in the church following the service.
