Oscar Eugene Bates "Gene"
Surrounded by his family, Gene slipped away to join his Heavenly Father on May 31, 2012 at the age of 87.
He was born May 28, 1925 in Midwest, WY. the son of Charles and Sarah Bates. He grew up and attended schools in Midwest and Minnesota where he played basketball and worked on a dairy farm. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
He met and married, Mary Elizabeth, the love of his life in Union, Missouri, June 15, 1947. They spent the first years of their life in Midwest where Gene worked for Amoco Production Company. There they raised two daughters, Cathy and Sharon. In 1959 Gene transferred to Riverton and retired from Amoco after 37 years. In 1997 he and Mary moved to Casper to be closer to their children.
Gene spent many years hunting and fishing with his family teaching his children, and grandchildren to enjoy the outdoors.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Mary Elizabeth, parents Charles and Sarah Bates, 7 brothers, Roscoe C., Roy T., Clarence, Clyde F. John, Raymond, and Robert, 2 sisters, Thelma Palmer and Katherine Armstrong.
He is survived by his two daughters, Cathy and husband Norman Brown of Casper, Sharon and husband Jerry Lucas of Sheridan. Gene was blessed with three grandchildren, Shannon Cole (John) of Green River, Dike Brown (Amber) of Casper, and Jeramy Lucas (Kathy) of Sheridan. He was a proud great grandfather of seven, Brock (Alisha) and Tiffany Rocovits, Rory and Whitney Brown, Shaye Bomar, Addison and Justyce Lucas. He is also survived by 1 sister Ruth Hendricks of Big Piney and Numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 pm Monday, June 4, 2012 at Newcomer Funeral Home 710 E. 2nd Street Casper, WY. 82601
Funeral Services will be 1 pm Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Casper Foursquare Church 1400 South Forest Drive. Casper, WY. 82609.
Military Honors by Natrona United Veteran Council and Wyoming National Guard.
