CASPER -- A memorial service for Nancy Lee (Roper) Grieve Baker, 76, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at First Christian Church, where she had been a member since her baptism.
She died Nov. 19, 2007, at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center.
Born May 8,1931, to Vena May (Haworth) and Lance Earl Roper at the Roper ranch, the Oilcan, located on Dry Creek in the Sweetwater Valley.
Like her sisters, she attended the one-room schoolhouse on the ranch until she moved to Casper for the winters to attend high school, living with her Aunt Barbara and Uncle Charles Rose. A graceful dancer, a dexterous drummer with the band, and an honored queen of Job's Daughters, she was a popular member of the Natrona County High School graduating class of 1949.
On June 26, 1949, she married Bun Grieve in a double wedding with her older sister, Mary Lou and Paul Rechard. They lived on the UC, even though Bun co-owned the Dumbell Ranch. Later, after the birth of their son Glenn, they moved to Casper. Bun Grieve was killed in an automobile accident in 1967.
In 1973, Nancy Lee married Harold Baker. He also preceded her in death.
She suffered from multiple sclerosis since age 18. A fierce and gallant fighter against this debilitating and crippling disease, she worked tirelessly for many years to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She continued to dance and drive for as long as she was able. She loved company and to hear and tell stories. For years she joined the early morning "breakfast bunch" at the Olympus on CY Avenue. At home, she held court at the kitchen table. Relatives, friends from the ranch, next-door neighbors, and people from near and far dropped in and were always welcome, anytime, night or day.
Survivors include her son, Glenn James Grieve and his wife; two grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Daly; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; her older sisters, Barbara Jordan and Mary Lou Rechard; two brothers-in-law; and a nephew.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the Mary Lou Rechard Scholarship Fund, UW Alumni Association, 214 S. 14th St., Laramie, WY 82070.
Newcomer Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
