Michael Humphreys

Funeral services for Michael (Chris) Humphreys will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Cathedral in Laramie, Wyoming on Wednesday March 23, 2011 at 10:00 am. A visitation will be held at the church at 9:30 am. Burial will be in the Rawlins Municipal Cemetery, Rawlins.
Chris was born in Rawlins Wyoming to William B. and Christel M. Humphreys. Chris was preceded in death by his brothers Wesley C. and William R. Humphreys. Survivors include his nieces and nephews who love, respect and will miss him.
For the bulk of his career, Chris worked for the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming, running the geophysical shop. His work for the University took him on adventures across the United States and around the world. He worked all over Wyoming, survived a near miss plan crash in Norway, gathered data in the Russian Arctic, Swiss Alps, Greenland, and was truly upset when his health did not permit him to go on an expedition to Antarctica. He was a force of nature while at the controls of seismic recording instruments, in the field and in the lab. Though he had a strong theoretical understanding of geophysics, he loved being in the field. He recognized the value of getting his hands dirty, understanding how the numbers in the field were actually acquired, and what they meant. Though his unique grasp of technical issues, keen scientific insight, and his common sense, his word contributed significantly to the understanding of the earth beneath us, in Wyoming and around the world. Furthermore his technical expertise, combined with his sharp wit and sardonic humor, proved to be invaluable in the training of numerous grad students from around the world. Thus, his work lives on in the work of those who follow him.
His technical and adventurous nature also spilled into his private life. He experimented with kites to get the antennae for his Ham radios higher, he'd rarely say no to a fishing trip he tinkered with anything scientific.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper.
Services are entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home.
