May E. Tweedy

September 15, 1924 — September 12, 2015

May Eugena (Benson) Tweedy was born to Oscar and Ethel Benson on the 15th of September 1924 in De Beque, Colorado. May was the second to the youngest child of the Benson family and was also born on her older brother Jack Benson's birthday. Jack's parents gave him the honor of giving May her middle name, Eugena, which is the combination of the names of two female friends Jack was particularly fond of.
May had 5 older sisters, Elsie, Ruth, Christie, Agnes and Jane, the oldest, who was May's half sister. May also had two brothers, Jimmy who was the was the youngest of the family and Jack who was 12 years older than May. May and her family grew up on the family ranch in western Colorado which was located north of the town of De Beque along Clear Creek.
May's father, Oscar Emil Benson, was born in Sweden immigrating to the United States when he was a teenager. May's mother, Ethel, was born in Coolidge, Kansas. Ethel and Oscar met in La Junta, Colorado in the early 1900's and eventually moved to live on their ranch north of De Beque.
Oscar passed away in 1938 in Grand Junction, Colorado when May was only 14 years old after attempting to rescue a cow which was stuck in a creek during the fall of 1938. The story told was while rescuing the cow, Oscar became soaking wet and cold which led to contracted a serious case of pneumonia which resulted in his death at the age of 62. Years later, May's mother passed away in Seattle, WA at the age of 85 in 1971 from natural causes.
May graduated from De Beque High school in 1942 and met her husband, Everett Lavern "Vern" Tweedy, when he was working for the Rio Grande Railroad. The story Vern liked to tell was "that when he got off the train that day he saw the prettiest girl he had ever seen" and married her two days later on November 16, 1942.
May and Vern had their first child, Charles Lavern Tweedy in Glenwood Springs Colorado in September of 1943 and not long afterward moved to Casper, Wyoming. May's second child, Sherrie May Tweedy, was born on May of 1945 in Casper, WY and their youngest child, Paul Tweedy, was born in Casper, WY in October of 1952.
May was a homemaker for her entire life and enjoyed taking care of her family and remained married to Vern for 58 years until his death in 2001 in Casper, Wyoming.
After Vern's death, Paul stayed at home with his mother to take care of her as May's health began to decline, eventually becoming her caretaker. On August 7th 2015, May accidentally fell at home breaking her hip. On September 12th 2015, three days before her 91st birthday, May passed away in her sleep with her son Paul by her bedside.
May is preceded in death by her husband Vern, her mother and father and all of her brother's and sister's.
