Wyoming native and local attorney Marvin Lord Bishop III passed away March 19th soon after being diagnosed with cancer. He is the patriarch of a loving family that is gathering from several parts of the country. His passing ends a life time of achievements and credits that touched many lives.
He was born August 28th 1933 to Marvin and Georgeanne Bishop of Casper. He was the grandson of one of Casper's founding families. He attended NCHS as did the three generations following him.
Marvin mastered the jazz trumpet while attending Washington and Lee University and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S Army and served two years in West Germany and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant.
He then attended college in Colorado and graduated from the University of Wyoming Law School. The career began. He teamed up with his father to form the law firm of Bishop and Bishop. Their clients were among some of Wyoming's most notable ranching and civic figures. The firm was widely respected for its integrity and compassion.
Along the way he became reacquainted with his high school classmate, JoAnn Hawkins and soon married her and welcomed her two young sons into his life. A life of adventure began with memorable fishing trips to the family property in the Big Horns and Jackson Hole. They built a family cabin on Casper Mountain that became a gathering point for his growing family and many close friends. He graciously shared his beloved snowmobile trails with the Mountain cross country skiing community who enjoy the Bishop Loop today.
He nourished and expanded his musical interests through the Casper Drum and Bugle Corps and travelled the state with his family to participate in parades and concerts.
He and his father filled the Casper Odd Fellow building with mischievous humor and the aroma of cigars for 52 years. He gratefully brought fellow attorney Jerry Yaap into the practice that became the well-respected firm of Bishop, Bishop and Yaap. During this time he answered his community's need for a municipal court judge, serving 25 years on the bench where he called them like he saw them.
He was a very distinguished and familiar figure in the downtown district and could be seen waving and greeting his vast network of friends. Most encounters ended with some light hearted laughter and heart felt sincerity. Marvin's success never surpassed his love for people and taught us all there is no social barrier.
Marvin loved to travel, scuba dive, and follow his beloved Denver Broncos and Wyoming Cowboys.
He leaves behind his wife of 50 years and fellow adventurer JoAnn, his two sons, David (Patty) and Gary (Camae) Chittim; daughter, Peggy Simpson; grandchildren, Amy (Keith) Wiginton, Blake Chittim, Rachel Chittim, Blythe Chittim, and Chance Chittim; great grandchildren, Shae and Coty; sister, June Rudolph; nieces, Maren, Arlyn, and Patty; and nephews, Steve and Danny.
Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow at the Casper County Club.
