Marlyn Jean Black

May 7, 1943 — May 14, 2019

Marlyn (Lyn Brown) Corbett Black passed from this life on May 14, 2019, a victim of cancer. She was born May 7, 1943 in Joliet, IL, to William L. "Bud" Brown and Irene (Matuszewski). In 1946, her father left his home in Lemont, IL, to find work in the west, getting off an Oregon-bound bus for lunch in Casper. Finding lots of work for ironworkers, it was here his plans changed, and he chose instead to bring his family to Wyoming. Marlyn attended St. Anthony's School, NCHS ('61) and Casper College. She married Leroy Corbett in Casper in 1962 and they had two daughters, Eileen and Marlene "Sam". They later divorced. In 1981, she married Tom Black, who preceded her in death in February 2006. For a short time in the late 1980's, they enjoyed ranching in Barnum, WY; lived in Buffalo, WY, and then returned to Casper in 1990.

Marlyn's career path took her into organization management and tourism promotion. She was employed by the Casper Area Chamber of Commerce beginning in 1967, serving as the assistant manager from 1972 to 1981. She was the first executive director for the Platte River Parkway Trust, the Big Horns Economic Development Assoc. in Buffalo, and the Casper Area Convention and Visitors Bureau/Natrona County Lodging Tax Board. She appreciated the support she received from so many organizations that brought their regional and national events and conventions to Casper during her tenure with the Bureau, including the College National Finals Rodeo. For two years, she was a partner in the association management and advertising firm, (Judi) Anderson & Black, Inc. From 2009 to 2012 she was the office manager and bookkeeper for the Casper Ghosts/Rockies in Casper and Grand Junction. She most recently worked part time for Mountain-Pacific Quality Health Foundation and did contract work for business under Access Wyoming LLC.

She served on and was chairman of the Central Wyoming Fair Board, the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Casper Area Transportation Planning Process, the 1984 One Percent Committee and the Wyoming Travel Industry Council. She served on the board for the Tate Geological Museum, National Historic Trails Center, College National Finals Rodeo, the Old West Trails Foundation, Nebraska-Wyoming Highway 26 Association and CATC. She was a 4-H leader when her daughters were of that age; and working with the neighborhood children was one of her most entertaining and memorable experiences.

Marlyn enjoyed attending her children's and then grandchildren's school functions. She was an avid reader, and talented writer. Her hobby was rehabbing the property on which she was reared. She also loved traveling and spending time with family, following them in their academic and sports endeavors.

She is survived by two brothers, Gary Brown (Pam Atkins), Casper; and Bill (Lois) Brown of Cody; her daughters, Eileen (Steve) Ford and their children, Lindsey and Eli; and Marlene "Sam" (Dennis) Carrick and their children Dalton (Aubrey) and Chelsea; two great-grandchildren, Nailah and Evelynn Carrick; three step-children: Bodae Black and son, Malakai, Denver; Britney (Tim) Hendershott, Dubai, and their sons, Uli and Tymon; and Cody (Shannon) Black and children, Maura and Gavin of Anchorage - along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Tom.

Her family would like to thank her Doctors, Joe Rosen and John Purviance, along with the incredible staff at Rocky Mountain Oncology for all the amazing care she received during her nine-year battle with breast cancer. Special thanks also to the team at Primrose Retirement Community where she spent the last several weeks of her life. She was truly blessed to have the love and support of so many dedicated people.
