After 96 years, Margaret "Jean" Burgess took her leave on Saturday, September 1, 2018, surrounded by her daughter and her devoted caregivers and friends at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center.
Jean was born to Agnes (Moore) and Dee Burtch on August 11, 1922, in Ft. Morgan, CO. She was raised with her younger sister, Betty, on the family ranch on Sand Creek below Ferris Mountain. Not long after graduating from high school, she met Tom Burgess, who worked on a nearby ranch, and announced to her parents that she was going to marry that red-haired man. On September 20, 1941, she did just that, embarking on a 63-year marriage that would take her from the Buzzard Ranch near Alcova to Muleshoe, TX, and ultimately back to her Wyoming roots. In her ranching years, she was the go-to foster parent for countless bum lambs, calves, and working dogs and cats. When her daughter reached school age, Jean was forced to leave the ranch to spend school years in Rawlins, WY, where she was a popular lunch lady at Rawlins High School for many years.
Known for her wisdom, Jean could always be counted on to be the sensible one at any gathering.
Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, sister Betty Burtch, grandson Wade Berryhill, great-granddaughter Tara Ellard, and nephew Will D. Ramsour. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Berryhill (Whitney Wharton), granddaughter Jodi (Don) Ramsour, grandson Clint (Tracy) Leonard, 10 great-grandchildren, and 5 nieces.
At her request, there will no services. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Wild Horse Institute (paypal.me/AWHI ) for the care of the Wyoming 14 - a group of young horses rescued from slaughter in northern Wyoming in 2014 - would be appreciated.
