Lyle was born January 15, 1921 in Newport Nebraska to Roy Asbury Johnson and Maude Effa Carlise. Lyle passed away at the age of 91 on March 26, 2012 of complications following a heart attack.
Lyle was raised on a ranch north of Hartville, WY and graduated from Sunrise High School. Following graduation, he went to work in the Sunrise Iron Mine and then to Hawaii to construct the underground fuel tanks for the military. It was during this construction that he witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor. He always said how futile it felt to sit on the steps of their barracks and watch the Japanese planes fly over so low that they could see the pilots. Being a civilian construction detail they had no arms. After completion of the tanks, he returned to the mainland and joined the U.S Army. During the remainder of the war he served in the Pacific Theater from Australia to New Guinea, then the liberation of Luzon and the Philippines all the way to Japan. He was the first group of American military to set foot on Japanese soil to prepare for the Japanese surrender.
He returned to Wyoming and married Betty Jane Werner and moved to Casper shortly afterwards to go to work for Standard Oil refinery and has made Casper his home ever since. He retired from American Oil (Standard Oil) after 30 some years.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Walter and Orley, and two sisters, Vera Clement and Bernice Morgan, a grandson, Ryan Sayler and son-in-law, Jon Werner.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty and four children Barbara Werner (Billy Brogdin), Lyle Jr. (Cathie) Johnson, and Linda (Tim) Garriott all of Casper and Devona (Steve)Sayler of Louisville, CO. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Jon (JC)Werner, Tim Garriott Jr., Justin Garriott, Chad Garriott and Tami Page all of Casper, Joseph Johnson of San Antonio, TX and Nikki Mutz of Erie, CO and 13 great grandchildren.
