Lowell Stephens passed away peacefully at Meadow Wind nursing facility February 29, 2024 at the age of 95. He was born May 23, 1928, to Phoebe (Vaught) and Lowell O. Stephens in Illinois where he was delivered by his grandfather Dr. Oliver Stephens.
Lowell grew up in Powell, entering into the Army upon graduation from high school there in 1946. He served in Korea for 24 months, and after being honorably discharged he attended the University of Wyoming.
He spent his life in various occupations from business owner to miner and union organizer. A voracious scholar, he read thousands of books on subjects from Plato to Calvin. He loved classical music and opera, and could identify almost any opera from a few notes played. He spent his life as a champion for the common people, and was an active member of the Democratic Party.
He became devoted friend of Merna and Greg Rierson in 1985. Merna preceded Lowell in death and he is survived by Greg.
He will be buried with his parents and grandparents in the Powell cemetery. No service is planned.
