CASPER -- A celebration of the life of Julie Mary Skillman, 67, will be held at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at Highland Park Community Church.
She was born March 19, 1940, in Bozeman, Mont., to Dr. Roland and Anne Scherer. She grew up in Bozeman and graduated high school from Hampden DuBose Academy in Zellwood, Fla. She then earned a home economics degree from Wheaton College in Illinois and taught high school in Zeeland, Mich.
On June 16, 1964, she married Allan Skillman in Bozeman, Mont. She worked at Western Washington State University for a short time. When they moved to Casper, she taught continuing education in home economics at Casper College for 10-1/2 years. For the last 21 years, she was an image consultant for Color Me Beautiful.
She served as a Stonecroft Ministries leader in Wyoming, beginning in 1972 and served in other roles prior. She was also a member of Highland Park Community Church and served on the Faith Promise Missions Committee. She was known and loved as a mentor, role model and encourager. In 2006, she received the Stonecroft Heart Award for outstanding service and a servant's heart in reaching others.
She waged a courageous, long-term battle with cancer and faced numerous health problems as a result. Through it all, she continued to serve, support and inspire those around her.
She is survived by her husband, daughter, Anne Roberts and husband of Valparaiso, Ind.; son, Geoff and wife of Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, David Scherer and wife of Billings, Mont.; sister-in-law, sister, Petey Faber and husband of Wyoming, Mich.; brother, Martin Batts and wife of Longview, Texas, and brother, Tim Batts and wife of Manhattan, Mont.; her dear stepmom, Melania Scherer of Green Valley, Ariz., and four beloved grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Roland.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to Highland Park Community Church's Missions fund or to ovarian cancer research.
