Joseph Richard Maixner, 96, passed away May 3, 2019. He was born on the family farm near Bee, Nebraska, to Lawrence and Mary (Kantor) Maixner, on December 11, 1922, the 9th of 12 children. He grew up on that farm, graduated from high school and joined the Navy in Feb. 1943. He was assigned to the USS AJAX, a fleet repair ship during WWII. Joseph was a machinist mate traveling the Pacific Ocean repairing ships. He was a plank owner of this ship.
After his discharge in 1945 he returned to home where he married Eldine Duffek, his childhood friend. They lived in Chicago. Illinois, where their daughter was born and then in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where their son was born. They returned to Nebraska to farm for several years, moving to Cheyenne where he worked as a TV repairman. Moving to Colorado, they lived in several places while Joe worked for the Colorado Highway Department. Ft. Collins was home for 37 years. They moved to Casper eight years ago, living at Primrose.
Joe belonged to the VFW and the Knights of Columbus, being lifetime members in both. He belonged to Veteran's group while living in Casper, keeping his Navy days alive.
Joe was a hardworking, quiet, strong willed family person. He loved to golf, water ski, downhill ski, fish. Joe and Eldine had many great adventures traveling with friends during their square dancing and camping time. They traveled extensively after they retired, enjoying many great trips and stays in Arizona. In 2017 they were deemed to be the longest married Catholic couple in Wyoming.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Eldine; daughter, Jeanne (Bob) Hopkins and son, Bob (Gerrie) Maixner; grandchildren, Tim (Karen), Nick (Jana), and Kristy; 7 great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Brooke, Phineas, Miriam, Silas; one great-great-grandson, Rhett Joseph and his younger sister, Marie Kelly. His strong Catholic faith, passion for living his life, and his family served him well.
The family requests in lieu of flowers you may make a donation to Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions, True Care Women's Resource Center, St. Patrick's Catholic Church or charities of your choice.
A mass with military honors will be at St. Patrick's' Church Friday, May 10, at 10:30 with a luncheon following.
