John F. Nunley Jr., 88, of Casper passed away April 20th, 2010 in Cheyenne, Wy.
He was born in Catlettsburg, Ky. on Jan. 3, 1922, the son of John F. and Ludella Rice Nunley Sr.
John met the love of his life, Virginia Houx Nunley, while serving in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII in which he had enlisted as soon as he could. He moved to Wyoming from his home in Kentucky shortly after receiving his honorable discharge; as he believed it was his duty and responsibility to support his wife's family emotionally after their son was killed in action during the war.
Even though he gave up an opportunity at the University of KY, to pursue his passion of becoming an English teacher, he felt he was more than rewarded with the life he chose and continued to dedicate significant time and effort to public education.
John was active in the local, state and national unions. He was President of the Casper Building Trades Assembly, and a Wyoming State AFL-CIO President. As a member of the first Board of Directors for Skyline Towers, he was a driving force in obtaining funding and services to construct the retirement facility. John's professional career spanned 45 years as a Lather and contractor. He was always pleased to show friends and family the results of his and his company's efforts by proudly pointing to the various facilities in and out of Casper that he had worked on.
John was a Master Mason, having petitioned to be a member of the Sheridan Lodge #8 so he could enjoy the fellowship of his father-in-law and brother-in-law. At the time of his passing, he had been a Mason for 64 years.
As an active member of the Democratic Party, John volunteered on many local and state-wide campaigns and was a long time precinct committee man. He championed the belief that the community should support all for the greater good. He matched his actions with his beliefs by being a Little League baseball coach and major supporter of other local athletic teams, a member of the Wyoming State Easter Seals Board, by running for the Casper College Board of Trustees and by volunteering at the West Wind Art Gallery.
He was devoted to his family, supporting them in all of their endeavors, he was especially proud of his four grandchildren. They gave him great joy as a vital and active part of his life.
In return for his belief in people, all who met him respected and admired him. He will be remembered for his quick wit, gentle humor and that special twinkle in his eye. He will be greatly missed. His family will treasure his memory and hope to carry on in his footsteps.
Survivors include three children, Cynthia Nunley of Lander, WY, John Franklin Nunley III and his wife Debra of Cheyenne, WY and Michael Nunley and his wife Karin of Castle Rock, CO. and four grandchildren, Stephanie, John F. IV, Melissa and Michael Jr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be Friday, April 30, 2010; 1:00 PM at Oregon Trail state Veterans Cemetery with Deacon Ed McCarthy officiating. The family will receive friends at the Newcomer Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM. A reception will follow at the Carpenter's Local 1564 Union Hall, 642 E. A St., Casper. Memorial contributions may be made to the Casper Humane Society, the Central Wyoming Hospice Home or the donor's choice.
