John B. Maher

March 18, 1930 — June 1, 2016

John B. Maher, age 86, of Casper, Wyoming passed away peacefully on June 1, 2016 at home, surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with cancer. John was born on March 18, 1930 in Midwest, Wyoming to Arthur J. and Doris Marie (Sparks) Maher. John graduated from Midwest High School in 1948.

John spent much of his youth in the Midwest and Buffalo areas. He began working at the age of 13 and enjoyed fishing, hiking, rock collecting and exploring his love of the outdoors. John graduated from Midwest High School in 1948.

In 1951, he married Alice Hirsch. They had 2 daughters, Sherri and Laura Christine (Christy) and a son, Douglas (Doc). Alice preceded him in death after a lengthy illness.

John served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict. After his tour of duty, John attended the University of Wyoming and received his Bachelor's Degree in Education and his Master's Degree from the University of Colorado in Fort Collins.

He began teaching Mathematics and Industrial Arts at Dean Morgan Junior High School in 1960. John dedicated 28 years to teaching and retired from Dean Morgan in 1988.

In 1975, he married Marie Reeb and became stepfather to her 4 children, John, Karen, Anne and Steven.

He was an avid fisherman. You could regularly see him out at Pathfinder on his boat or from the shoreline, reeling in the big ones. John and Marie enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Arizona. He was a true rock hound and a past member of the local Casper Rock Hound Club. He took great pride in his collection of stones and fossils. John could be seen behind the pages of a good western novel, solving a crossword puzzle or jigsaw, playing a board game or card games with Marie and friends, fixing something that needed to be fixed, enjoying coffee with his friends or teaching a grandkid how to properly destruct or construct something perfectly.

For years, John was a long time member of the Masons. He also served in the Shriners for some years. John and Marie were both devoted members of Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church in Casper. When the church closed, they became members of the Christ United Methodist Church. John never met a stranger. His quick wit and endless humor kept his family and friends entertained.
