CASPER -- Memorial services for James K. Wagoner, 87, will be held 11 a.m.Feb.14, 2008, at Newcomers Funeral Home. His body has been cremated.
He died Feb. 9, 2008, at the Central Wyoming Hospice Home, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on Dec. 1, 1920, in Creek County, Okla., the son of F. George and Leona K. Wagoner.
He graduated from NCHS in 1940. He graduated from Field Artillery Officers Candidate School as 2nd Lieutenant and served in the European and Pacific Theaters. He was a member of Lodge #54 AF & AM; Chapter #47 and Comandry #35. After his honorable discharge from military service in 1943, he worked in the oil fields around Casper.
He married E. Jean McAfee in Marion, Ind., in 1947, and returned to Casper with her and a stepson, Michael. He served as District Manager of Lane Wells Oil Company. He sold real estate for 10 years and then worked for Fenix & Sisson/John Brown up to the time of his retirement in 1986.
He loved Casper Mountain, where he spent time with family, and also where he began learning his technical rock climbing skills which he later taught his sons. He enjoyed leather tooling, archery, hunting, fishing, fly-tying, camping, target shooting and other outdoor sports.
He also studied photography, having his pictures of a Dunwoody Glacier climbing expedition, in the summer of 1961, published in National Geographic. He occasionally guided hunting trips around Wyoming.
He savored listening to and playing classical music, teaching himself classical guitar later in life. He delighted in organic gardening and participated in a composting business with his daughter, Lynn.
He was a lifetime member of the NRA, and collected black powder guns of the 19th century. He competed in silhouette and target shooting, winning extensive awards. He always strived to experience and learn more. He imparted his knowledge and skills to his children and friends.
He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, where he married his second wife, Sara M. Hoff, in 1979.
Survivors include five children, Kay Nuzum of Casper, Peggy Baca and her husband of Bellingham, Wash., James K. Wagoner II of Laramie, Lynn Dampman and her husband of Glenrock, and Frank Wagoner and his wife of Casper; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his beloved cat.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an older sister, Jeanne Earle, and his stepson, Michael (Golden).
