James (Jim) E. Tobin passed away on January 22, 2016.
He was born on April 11, 1925 in Casper, Wyoming to Richard and Nano Dunnigan Tobin, both of whom immigrated to Wyoming from County Cork, Ireland.
Jim attended St. Anthony's Elementary School and graduated from Natrona County High School in 1942. He played on the school's basketball and football teams. He was also a steer wrestling competing at several rodeos throughout Wyoming. Jim went to the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship, but his college career was cut short, as he was needed to help on the family ranch.
Jim met his wife, Sarah Aubry, on the dance floor at the Goose Egg Inn. She had just been transferred to Casper from Tulsa, Oklahoma with Stanolind Oil Company. They married on November 11, 1955 in Denver, Colorado and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Jim's father was a sheep rancher and branded his first sheep in 1903 with the VI sheep brand. Jim and his brothers, Jack and Bill, worked with their father until the time of his death in 1962. Jim enjoyed the sheep business, trailing the band of sheep to the Big Horn pasture each summer. Later, Jim and his son Mike began raising cattle, and continued ranching until the time of his death.
Jim's greatest joy was spending time with his family. Jim and Sarah spent many enjoyable years following their children and grandchildren as they competed in volleyball, basketball, football, track, FFA, and 4-H. Jim was recently asked what he was most proud of and he replied, "My great family." His infectious laugh and sense of humor were the highlights of family gatherings.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sarah, his son Mike Tobin (Chris) of Midwest, Wyoming, daughters Diane McNamee (Charlie) of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Eileen Tobin of Parker, Colorado, and Marilyn Tobin (Shayla) of Butte, Montana. He is also survived by six grandchildren; J.D Tobin, Breanne Johnson (Taylor), Dillon McNamee, Hannah McNamee, Alyse Tobin, and Brody Evenson. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack Tobin and Bill Tobin, and sisters Mary Tobin and Theresa Tobin.
The family is very appreciative of the wonderful care and compassion that Jim received in his final days at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center and at the Wyoming Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Salvation Army or the Blue Envelope Health Fund.
A viewing will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27 with services at 12 p.m. followed by burial at Highland Cemetery. A reception will be held at the VFW (1800 Bryon Stock Trail, Casper).
