James Leamon Carlton
Funeral services for James Leamon Carlton, 89, of will be Friday, 12-23-2005, 1:00 p.m. at Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery. Officiating will be Chaplain Leonard Robinson. Military honors will be accorded by the Natrona County United Veterans' Council and the Wyoming National Guard. Burial will be in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery.
A resident of Casper Wyoming since 1952 died December 19th at his son's home in Boulder, CO of congestive heart failure.
Jim was born May 9, 1916 in Chicago, IL where he remained until 1941. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University in June 1937 and his Master of Science degree from the University of Chicago in December 1940.
Jim joined the military in 1941 and was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. He saw active duty from March 7, 1942 to November 22, 1945. During his time in the Navy he was stationed in Auckland, New Zealand, Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, and New Delhi, India. He was honorably discharged from the United States Naval Reserves in October 1954.
After the war he moved to San Antonio, TX where he met Nina Stephens and they married July 28, 1949. They moved to Casper, Wyoming in 1952 where they made their home and raised four sons.
Jim had a long and interesting career as a Petroleum Geologist. He was Vice President of Canada Southern Oil Company, formed his own company as a Consulting Geologist and an independent lease broker, and served as the State Oil and Gas Supervisor for the State of Wyoming under Governors Hansen and Hathaway from 1962 to 1968.
During the 70's and 80's Jim lead numerous groups around the world and had some amazing adventures along the way. He and his wife were in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1968 during the Russian invasion. Jim organized and led the very first American group allowed into China in 1978. He completely circumnavigated the world five times, the last of which on the "Millennium Cruise". During his years of travel he visited all seven continents and 175 countries.
His interests were education, travel, gemstones, and fine food. Jim spoke fluent Spanish and Portuguese, and was capable of conversing in Latin, Italian, German, Russian and French. He loved his family and friends dearly and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. .
Survivors include his wife, Nina Carlton of Casper, four sons, Jim, Tom and John Carlton of Casper and Bill Carlton of Boulder, CO, eight grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
Memorials may be sent to the Veterans' Memorial Museum.
