James C. Carlton

November 6, 1950 — December 9, 2020

James C. Carlton
aka 'Jimbo', 'Tunes'
11/06/1950 – 12/09/2020

After a valiant battle, James C. Carlton passed away early in the morning of 12/09/2020 from diabetes related, end-stage renal failure, with Covid-19 complications.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents James L. and Nina S. Carlton, and by his brother Thomas L. (Tom) Carlton.

In his final weeks, Jimbo drew to him a 'crowd of angels' in the form of Wyoming Medical Center's ER personnel and - most especially - the nurses and staff of the 5th floor PCU unit. Of those, a large handful, "Angels of a Higher Order", miraculously stood out from the crowd, providing exceptional care and kindness to him. For that, Jim's family will be eternally grateful.

Jim was born in Houston, Texas to James L. Carlton, Jr. and Nina Stephens Carlton, shortly thereafter moving to Casper, Wyoming in 1951. Growing up in Casper Jim was active in Little League baseball and in the early 60's, a number of times, his team were the Eastern Division City Champions. Being active in the Boy Scouts of America, Jim earned and was awarded the 'God and Country' and 'Order of the Arrow' honors, and ultimately attained his Eagle Scout.

A talented and accomplished musician, Jim marched with the Casper Troopers Drum and Bugle Corp in 1968 and 1969. In 1968, they won the CYO Nationals (Lowell, Massachusetts) and the North American Invitational in Toronto and also placed 3rd at the VFW Nationals in Detroit. In 1969, the Troopers won their second CYO and won the North American Invitational and World Open (Lynn, Massachusetts). They placed 3rd at VFW Nationals and 2nd at American Legion Nationals in Atlanta.

Jim attended Kelly Walsh High School (Sept. 1966-May 1968); graduated from New Mexico Military Institute Class of 1969; studied Music and Military Science, Class of 1970; studied Elementary Education New Mexico State (1970-1972); and studied Accounting and Business Management, Morse School of Business, Hartford, Connecticut (Class of 1976).

He enlisted in the Army 11/1974, serving in Darmstadt, Hessen and Augsberg, Germany. Shortly after returning from Germany, he settled in Connecticut where he met his future wife and children's mother, Susan Slattery.

Jim eventually moved back to Wyoming to raise his children, with the youngest, Kelsey being born here in Wyoming. He continued his career in Computer Programming and IT Tech Ops, writing and maintaining COBOL programs, and providing tech support. Retiring February 01, 2010 enabled Jimbo to spend more time with his grandchildren.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone, Jimbo is survived by his wife, Denise Carlton (Casper), and his four children, Shannon Muire' Foley (Connecticut), Ryan Austin Carlton (Utah), Scott Stephen Carlton (Casper) and Kelsey Marie Carlton (Casper), four grandchildren Jorge, Michael, Riley and Blaine.

He is also survived by his aunt, Laura Jo (Gary) Schisler (Pennsylvania), his brothers Wm. A. (Bill) Carlton (Boulder) and John D Carlton (Casper), three nieces Dawn (Joe) Armatys (Portland), Hilary (Bill) Cage, Whitney (Peter) Lang, and four grandnieces.

Additionally, 'Tunes' is also survived by his close personal friend, Eddie Morgan and his entire 2nd family of Brethren.

There will be a visitation from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM, on Monday, Dec., 21, 2020 at the Newcomer Casper Chapel. A private service will take place at Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery.
