Irene Horky Mauler, age 95, of Casper, passed away December 23, 2015 at Life Care Center of Casper. On May 13, 1920, a daughter was born to James and Mary Horky in Sargent, Nebraska. She was named Irene, which is the Greek word for peace, and was one of five children born to the couple. She lived her young life in Sargent on the family farm and graduated from Sargent High School in 1938.
After graduating, she worked for the post office in Sargent for four years, then in 1942 went to Chicago, where she was employed as a receptionist for a doctor.
While in Chicago, she met Ivan Mauler. They were married on July 18, 1942 in Chicago, just before Ivan went into the military service. Irene worked for the doctor until Ivan returned from war in 1946, when they moved to Casper. They were married for 52 years when Ivan passed away in 1993.
She was employed by the Boy Scouts of America for nine years before going to work for Power Service. At Power Service, she was instrumental in the installation of their computer system. In 1982 she retired from Power Service after 22 years as their bookkeeper.
In 1969 they purchased a place at Alcova, where they had a boat. Many fond memories were made while enjoying their cabin at the lake.
In her spare time, Irene enjoyed crocheting, bead work, and playing cards. While Ivan was still alive, they went to Yuma, Arizona for the winter beginning in 1983. After Ivan passed away, Irene continued to go to Yuma for 13 more years until 2006. They also enjoyed cruises to places like the Panama Canal and Hawaii.
Irene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. In April 2015 at their Spring Conference, she was present with a certificate honoring her 54 years of membership in the organization.
She is survived by her sister Lucille Barnhart of Sargent, Nebraska and her husband Ben, daughter Sharolyn Becker and her husband Stan of Casper, grandchildren Gary, Larry, and Tina Anderson of Casper, 5 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
When we stop to think about Irene, let us smile and remember her for her kindness and caring for others.
