Homer R. Lathrop, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 11, 2009. He was born on June 22, 1919 , the son of Dr. Homer and Jean Brooks Lathrop. Homer was raised in Casper and graduated from Natrona County H.S. in 1937. He attended the University of Wyoming and Kansas State University. He returned to Casper to pursue a career in ranching. On Valentine's Day 1941 he married Virginia A. Byron. They raised their five children on the L3 ranch east of Casper. He and Virginia also founded Lathrop Feed and Equipment Co. in 1952.
As a devoted husband and family man, Homer combined his strong work ethic and sense of fun to involve the whole family in the ranching activities. He enthusiastically supported his children and grandchildren in their 4-H, musical, and sporting activities and was often known as the "loudest" fan in the stands! He was a consummate reader and history buff and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He was also a favorite dance partner among their wide circle of friends.
Homer's many contributions to the Ag industry earned him the Agri-businessman of the Year and Friend of 4-H awards. He served on the County Planning Commission and Water Development Board of Wyoming, was President of the Natrona County Farm Bureau and the State Board of Agriculture Directors and was a member of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce, he helped organize the first Ranch-City party. As a life-long Republican, Homer was a precinct committeeman for over 30 years and served 2 terms in the Wyoming House of Representatives. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Casper Country Club and an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include Homer's wife Virginia and his children Homer R. Lathrop, III and wife Sandra of Fox River Grove, IL; Gary Lathrop and wife Peri and Kent Lathrop and wife Valerie of Casper, Steve Lathrop and wife Barbara of Greensboro, N.C., and Renee Joy and husband Bill of Buffalo, WY. They have 15 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His parents and his sister Mary Hester Nicolaysen preceded him in death.
Services will be held, Thursday, July 16th at 11:00 am. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church
at 701 S. Wolcott in Casper. Memorials may be made to the church, Blue Envelope Health Fund, 1111 Bella Vista, Casper, WY 82601 or a charity of choice.
