Long time resident, Helen Hall, 100, passed away on September 23rd. She was born November 14, 1907 in Omaha, Nebraska to Otto and Henrietta Gehrman. She attended grade school in Florence, NE, the Sacred Heart Girls School in Omaha. After graduation and business college, she went to work for Father Flanagan at Boy's Town. She met Calvin Hight Hall on a blind date and they married on June 17, 1926. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 1986 just 3 months before he passed away. Before coming to Wyoming, Helen and Calvin lived in Chicago for two years following his graduation from Northwestern College of Optometry. They moved to Cheyenne in 1935 and then to Casper in 1938 where Helen was office manager for Calvin's optometric practice until he retired in 1978. Her skills at organizing her time and talent were legendary along with a life-long philosophy of frugality. Early on, she joined an investment club and became a market analyst with a keen sense of timing. She shared her treasure generously as she established college funds for each great-grandchild, 19 in all, and 4 great great-grandchildren. Along with tending her family, she enjoyed her involvement in St. Anthony's CCW and Regal Club, St. Elizabeth and St. Magdalene circles, Republican Women, Fine Arts, Departmental Club and Friends of the Library. She enjoyed playing bridge and bingo, was an accomplished water colorist in her younger years, and in her spare time, she did exquisite needle point, crewel, crocheting and china painting.
As each grandchild married, her gift included a hand crocheted afghan, a needle point pillow and one of her paintings. Helen and Calvin were able to travel after he retired and they enjoyed Hawaii, Alaska, Maine, Florida and the Bahamas together. After he died, she joined a travel club for more adventures. She celebrated her 80th birthday steamboating the Mississippi and was planning to go on a tundra buggy to the Arctic. She drove her own car until she was 90 and was so proud of her spotless record behind the wheel. She celebrated a grand family reunion on her 90th birthday with 4 generations present. Recently, with a great great-grandchild on her lap, she celebrated with 5 generations at her 100th birthday.
Her biggest legacy is her spiritual devotion and all her family and friends were very near and dear to her in her prayers for each of them. Her intentions were almost always granted and she was humbly grateful for the many blessings she received in her lifetime.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Butler of Casper, 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, her parents, 2 brothers of Omaha, her daughter Joyce Myres, grandson, 1 great-grandson and 1 great great-grandson.
Memorials to Holy Cross Center, Friends of the Library or the Casper Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.
A rosary will be recited at 12:30pm followed by a funeral service at 1pm on Saturday, September 27th at Newcomer Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
