Hazel Marie West was born on September 2, 1925 to Glenn and Bertha Johnston in Rapid City, SD. As a baby, she moved to Midwest, Wyoming where she was raised and graduated from high school in 1944. After high school, she attended Eugene Bible College. After she graduated, she moved to Casper, Wyoming and worked at the hospital as a nurse's aide. After her father died in 1950, she bought a house with her mother in Mills, Wyoming and worked at Wyoming Automotive. Hazel attended the tent meetings in North Casper which later led to the founding of several churches, including Calvary Baptist Church where she married the love of her life, Frederick Charles West on Valentine's Day, 1960.
She was a charter member of Riverview Baptist Church, now known as Lighthouse Baptist Church, which was her church until she went to home to Heaven. More important to her than anything else was her relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom she accepted in her life as an adolescent. As she raised her two children, she worked for Mills school in the early 1970's. She finished her working career as a Data Technician for the State of Wyoming.
God blessed her with two children, Wanita Verwey (husband, Martin Verwey) of Friend, Nebraska and Stephen West of Mills, Wyoming. Hazel enjoyed having her family over or going to her daughter's house, especially after the arrival of her grandchildren, Autumn Verwey of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jeremy (wife, Natasha) of Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, Amber Benton (husband, Craig) of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Aspen Verwey of Lincoln, Nebraska. Hazel was able to meet all three of her great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ethaniel Verwey of Beaver Crossing and Faith Benton of Fort Smith.
Hazel enjoyed having a flower garden, although Stephen and Wanita did not enjoy the work of weeding as kids. Some of it must have rubbed off as both Stephen and Wanita enjoy gardening. Toward the end of Hazel's life, one her pleasures was viewing the flowers that Stephen planted for her every spring.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Memorials may be made to Camp Grace, PO BOX 764, Wheatland, WY 82201.
