Retired U.S. Army Major Harold Herbert Holmes, III, 69, died on Friday, January 30, 2015 at Shepherd of the Valley in Casper, Wyoming, after a brief illness. Hal was born on August 15, 1945 at Fort Gordon, GA to the late SGM Harold H. Holmes and Annie Davis Holmes. On November 11, 1967 in Kitzingen, Germany, he married Marie-Claude Simone Gerard, his wife of forty-seven years, who survives in Casper. He is also survived by his daughter Jennifer Anne Hewitt and her husband Michael of Plano, TX, his three grandchildren: Heather, Jack, and Bobby Hewitt, three sisters: Helen Holmes of Deridder, LA, Charlotte Holmes of State College, PA, and Denise Jed of Panama City, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Scott Gerard Holmes.

After graduating from Hampton High School in Hampton, VA in 1962, Hal worked in Virginia, Illinois, and California, and attended Long Beach City College until he was drafted into the Army in 1965. He graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, OK in 1966, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He served with the First Infantry Artillery in Vietnam in 1967-1968, completed two tours of duty in Germany and an assignment in Korea, and Stateside served at Hunter Liggett Military Reservation in California, Ft. Monroe, VA, Ft. Sill, OK, White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and as a National Guard Army adviser officer in Casper before his retirement in 1985. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Award, and the Army Commendation Medal. He earned a Bachelor's degree in accounting at Cameron University in 1973.

He enjoyed a successful second career as a Director of Naval Munitions at Lockheed-Martin in Texas for seventeen years before retiring to Casper in 2002. In 2010, Hal published a children's book, The Tale of the Purple Chicken and the Orange Frog. In addition to writing fiction and scary stories for his grandchildren, he loved watching Westerns and reading spy novels. He enjoyed restoring cars and collecting car-related memorabilia.

A celebration of Hal's life will take place on Friday, February 6, 10:00 am at the Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery Chapel in Evansville, WY.
