CASPER -- Funeral services for Gordon "Pete" W. Peters, 80, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bill Moore and Margaret Gillikin of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment with private services will take place at a later date in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery.
Viewing will be held on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m.
He died Friday, March 23, 2007, at Wyoming Medical Center.
He was born March 24, 1926, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Earl L. Peters and Winifred Carver. He was raised in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1944.
In 1945, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force.
In 1947 he began working with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Mason City as an installer-repairman. On Feb. 28, 1948, he married Mary A. McCarthy. He transferred to Mountain Bell in Casper in December of 1959. He later became assistant manager in residence, a title he held until retiring on Dec. 13, 1983.
He had the honor of connecting the White House phone to President Johnson's plane on Oct. 12, 1964.
He enjoyed RV camping with family covering all 50 states in the U.S. several times. He was versed in electronics and built the first color television set in his neighborhood. He also loved fishing, hunting and bowling. In his later years he became an avid golfer and he enjoyed listening to the Gaither Gospel Hour on TV.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Peters of Casper; daughter, Nancy Jenkins of Council Grove, Kan.; son, Gregg Peters of Aurora, Colo.; sister, Shirley Swezey of Springfield, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Donald Peters.
