Genevieve Hurless

December 1, 1933 — December 14, 2012

Genevieve L. "Gen" Hurless, 89, of Casper passed away peacefully December 14th, 2012 from complications of heart disease.

She was born to the late John C and Helen Burley, December 1st, 1923 in Pocatello, Idaho. During childhood and young adulthood she lived in Idaho, Montana and California. She attended high school in Dillon, MT and telegrapher school in Pocatello, ID after which she worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for several years during World War II. She held several positions including becoming one of the few female stationmasters at a small station in western Montana.

After WWII she moved back to Montana and eventually to West Yellowstone to run an outdoor store where she met and later married the late Robert S. Hurless in July 1947. They had four sons.

Gen is survived by her four sons: Rob and his wife Roberta Hurless, of Cheyenne; Rhett Hurless of Bozeman, MT; Rik and his wife Kim Hurless of Bozeman, MT; Rock and his wife Brenda Hurless of Casper. She is also survived by her sister Barbara and her husband Bob Briney, of Butte, MT. Additionally, she is survived by eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Gen loved to cook and was a favorite bake sale contributor during her years in West Yellowstone. She was also a hunter having killed an elk with her rifle on the way from town to the ranch home one fall afternoon. She was a member of a number of bowling leagues when the family lived in Bozeman and Helena. Gen also liked attending horse races, an interest she shared with her husband Bob. But her passion was playing bridge, which she did avidly for over 60 years until days before her death. Her 'bridge buddies' were her best friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Cancer Society as Gen was a two time breast cancer survivor.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 12th at the Newcomer Funeral Home in Casper. A graveside family service will be held in the spring at the family plot in Bozeman, MT.
