It is said that the world needs more Cowboys but sometimes heaven does too…
On May 7th, 2023 heaven received a new cowboy. Garland Eugene "Gene" Calhoun passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. The world looks differently today for his family and those that loved him.
Gene was born on 11/14/1934 in Loup City Nebraska to Hallie and Carl Bales. Gene spent his childhood growing up on ranches in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Gene was a living example of the cowboy culture and he lived his life by the famous Code of the West.
In 1955 Gene enlisted in the US Navy and was a second class weapons/torpedo specialist. He was honorably discharged in 1959.
On March 10th, 1956, in an infamous Wyoming blizzard ,Gene and the love of his life Beverly Joan Flohr drove to Fort Collins, Co to marry because she was too young to be married in the church of her faith in Cheyenne Wyoming. Together, Gene and Bev created a unique 67 year partnership that thrived on their undying love,loyalty and commitment to each other.
Gene was a friend to all who knew him and was deeply loved by so many people. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beverly. Children Tina (Calhoun) and Jeff Conley, and Monty Calhoun Grandchildren Courtney and Casey LaMasters, Kelsey Conley, and Kassidy and Chris Tabatt. Great Granchildren Hunter and and Haylen LaMasters and Ryleigh, Teagan and Chase Tabatt.
At Gene's request no services will be held. Gene's grandchildren will be hosting a celebration of life on Saturday, June 17th at the Van Tassel Community Center in Van Tassel, WY.
